‘ An apple a day keeps the doctor away’. Whoever had coined this phrase would surely had caused some indignation then. But doctors nowadays could not be bothered with it as most have more patients than they can handle. It now looks like apples may have turned into doctors’ good friends and are no longer depriving them of patients.
This phrase was drummed into us since we were kids. But it looks like we have to erase the phrase and replace it with an opposite phrase. Going by what researchers from Purdue University have concluded after analysing data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration from 2000 to 2009, apples are highly contaminated with pesticides! We should be now asking … ‘An apple a day, would it really keep the doctor away’?
It is frightening to note that though ‘the chemicals keep both bugs and bacteria away from crops, they are also linked to various health problems, from nervous system disorders to cancer’.
