How care home keeps elderly healthy

In Behavior, Dementia, Education, Health, Senior citizens, choices on June 27, 2008 at 3:57 pm

Health correspondent, BBC News

A year ago, 88-year-old Jean Lavender used to find walking any distance a struggle. Now she is keen to get outside for a walk most days. And she puts the transformation down to the most simple of medicines – water.

She is one of a group of residents at a care home in Suffolk who have been encouraged to increase their intake of water. And they have all reported dramatic results. Jean says she feels 20 years younger. ”I feel more alert – more cheerful too. I’m not a miserable person, but it’s added a sort of zest.” Read the rest of this entry »

All for the love of her little boy!

In Children, Health, Relationship, Sacrifice, parents on June 27, 2008 at 11:27 am

A woman who was reported to be desperate to lose weight for the sake of her son died from complications days after having gastric bypass surgery. She weighed more than 120 kg. and felt her obesity was stopping her from doing the things she wanted to with her 5-year-old son.

A mother’s love knows no bounds. May her soul rests in peace and may her son find the kind of love she desperately wanted to give him. May the both of them find true happiness. Good things still happen in the world, there is still hope!

Truth unlocks through your hair

In Health, family on June 26, 2008 at 11:39 pm

It seems hair tests have been developed to tell just about everything a person has ingested since their last visit to the hair salon. A single strand of hair amounts to an entire biological information bank. And the longer the hair, the more information it contains. Hair grows at about 1.25cm (0.5in) a month, so analysis can span years. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology said its hair test was fair easier to carry out than taking blood and revealed far more.

This would mean doctors would now get additional information on the symptoms of our illnesses to help them diagnose our ills. Faster and earlier detection of illnesses would be forthcoming then?  Should we all start keeping longer hairs? Would bald people be at a disadvantage, then? How wide-spread and advanced is this technique, and are other universities offering this course? The test should not be expensive, should it? Wonderful, the way science is developing!

Mugabe stripped of his knighthood

In Abuses, Behavior, Cruelty, Politics, president on June 26, 2008 at 6:28 pm

Queen E stripped Robert Mugabe of his honorary knighthood over his ‘abject disregard’ for democracy and abuse of human rights. And due to international pressure on Mugabe.  Nelson Mandela also broke his silence on the issue, criticising Zimbabwe’s ‘tragic failure of leadership’.

Serves him right, he has blatant disregard for the opinions of others. He just wants to stay in power and is not shy in using brutal force to fulfill his wishes.  He rigged the recent presidential election and used thugs to intimidate and caused physical hurts and even deaths.

For all those like him, this should serve as a timely warning that they may plan and scheme but things may not work out the way they like.

Have you heard of Particle Smoking?

In Behavior, Children, Father, Health, cancer, choices, environment, family on June 26, 2008 at 7:25 am

An Australian research claims that the dangers of passive smoking are now accepted beyond doubt – but what about ‘particle smoking’?  It states that even if adults step outside for a cigarette, children are risk from nicotine particles being carried back into homes on parents’ clothes and hair.  It says small residual traces of nicotine in the air are enough to cause an increased risk of respiratory problems in children.

The report in the journal, Indoor Air, calls parents to quit the habit. Interesting! So, fathers and mothers who smoke, you can still still cause respiratory problems in your children even if you don’t smoke in your own homes. Help create a healthy environment for the children.

For the sake of your children, give up smoking altogether!

What is a book supposed to do ?

In Books, Experience, Pleasure, language, words on June 25, 2008 at 11:04 pm

I have come across an interesting book which I feel I should share with you. The author is a lama but he does not preach or sermonise to the readers. His style is very down to earth and the things he imparts are equally  down-to-earth and practical. Sincerely hope some of you read it and can reap benefits from it. Read the rest of this entry »

The art pieces from nature

In Blessings, Experience, Self-discovery, beauty, nature, photography on June 24, 2008 at 7:43 pm

Most of the time we are too busy to know we have master art-pieces right at our own backyard. They are created for our appreciation and to inspire us. It is none other than Nature itself which brings such beauty to us and it does it on a daily basis too. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s our responsibility, really!

In Abuses, Behavior, Social, awareness, choices, nature on June 23, 2008 at 8:54 pm

Is mother nature taking its revenge on us, or is she just showing us her anger, is she telling us she is suffering or is she giving us a warning?  Within the space of just two and a half months, so many calamities had occurred across this earth of ours. None of the continent is spared. A devastating cyclone hit Myanmar, a shattering earthquake rocked China, a destructive flood swept through Iowa in the US and a raging typhoon pelted the Philippines.
